In Manipur, fresh violence erupted on Saturday, leading to the death of six people as clashes between the Meitei and Kuki ethnic communities continued. The conflict, which began last year, stems from a court ruling to extend special benefits in jobs and education to the Meitei community, traditionally reserved for the Kukis. The violence has claimed over 225 lives and displaced around 60,000 people.
On Saturday morning, militants attacked Nungchappi village in Jiribam, killing a 63-year-old man. Later, in Rasidpur village, clashes led to the death of another local. This followed Friday’s rocket attack in Bishnupur district, which killed a priest and injured five others. Peace talks were recently held in Jiribam, but the violence persists despite efforts for reconciliation.

Government response and security measures
In response, Chief Minister N Biren Singh met with legislators and briefed Governor L. Acharya on the situation. The state police have intensified security measures, deploying anti-drone systems and using army helicopters to monitor the region. Ninety-two checkpoints have been set up, and 129 people have been detained for violations.
Attempts were made to loot weapons from Manipur Rifles camps, but security forces intervened with tear gas and blank rounds. The government also clarified that a controversial audio recording, which triggered protests demanding a separate tribal administration, was doctored. Despite these efforts, tensions remain high in the state.
